Five spot burnet on a grass stem.
The Five-spot Burnet (Zygaena trifolii) is a moth in the family Zygaenidae. It is found from North Africa, through the western Mediterranean, southern Great Britain and central Europe to Ukraine. It is not found in Scandinavia, the central Alps and Italy. The wingspan is 28–33 mm. Adults are on wing from the mid June to the beginning of August in one generation per year.
The larvae feed on the leaves of Lotus uliginosus and Lotus corniculatus. The species overwinters in the larval stage and may overwinter twice.
The Six-spot Burnet, Zygaena filipendulae, is a day-flying moth of the family Zygaenidae. It is a common species throughout Europe.
The sexes are similar and have a wingspan of 30–40 millimetres (1.2–1.6 in). The forewings are dark metallic green with 6 vivid red spots (sometimes the spots are merged causing possible confusion with other species such as Five-spot Burnet). Occasionally the spots are yellow or even...
